Alfred Taylor created the artwork for the plate. He called it a pleasure to make.

"One of the biggest issues I found I didn't want to take a lot of time speaking about, but it was one of the only challenges I found with the design," Taylor said. "As you know, in the early 19th century there wasn't a lot of color photography and it was a unique challenge to find a color palette that could represent our poet well and the African American community well."
